Kurt Steyrer

After studying medicine in Vienna and Prague, Dr. Kurt Steyrer opened his own dermatology practice in 1951. He also held the position of works medical officer at Simmering Graz Pauker AG from 1952 to 1981. Along with his many years of professional experience in the Austrian Physicians’ Chamber , Dr. Steyrer was active in politics for a number of years. With his medical background, he was especially active in health issues and environmental issues as a member of the National Council from 1975 to 1983. Following that, Dr. Steyrer was Federal Minister of Health and Environmental Protection for five years. He stepped down from his post in the government to run for Austrian president in 1985. Finally, from 1987 to 1988 he was a member of the Vienna City Council and of the provincial diet before retiring from daily politics. However, he continues to be active on behalf senior citizens and has belonged to the FGÖ Board of Trustees since the summer of 2006.
